Assessment visits at our Early Intervention Centre
Families of preschool children from around the regions have the opportunity to attend a four-day residential programme at our Early Intervention Centre (EIC) at our Christchurch campus. The programme focuses on the needs of the preschool tamariki and their whānau. Our aim is to support whānau to understand and manage their child's hearing level and to support their chosen mode of communication.
What to expect
The visit may include audiology, speech language assessments, literacy advice and Deaf Cultural awareness (including a visit to our onsite museum), visual communication strategies and NZSL. Families will also have time in the Early Intervention Centre (EIC) to meet other families of Deaf children.
Transportation costs are covered by the local District Health Board and meals and accommodation are provided at no charge; dietary requirements can be catered for.
On completion, families leave with a preschool resource pack and a special photo experience book highlighting their week.
A comprehensive report is also sent to the whānau, advisor and other relevant parties within three weeks of departure.
