Outreach audiology service

Ko Taku Reo Audiology has one Audiologist based at the Sumner campus in Christchurch. Audiology services in Auckland are currently being coordinated from Ko Taku Reo’s Auckland campus, with support from Christchurch’s Audiologist. Services in Auckland are currently provided by local Auckland DHB Audiologists.

At this point Audiology support to the Outreach School Service would only be through support to a local DHB Audiologist if they requested support from our Christchurch based Audiologist. (see below for information about Paul Peryman based in Christchurch)

Our Senior Audiologist

Our present audiologist, Paul Peryman, trained in audiology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He worked as Sole Charge Audiologist at Northland Base Hospital in Whangarei, New Zealand for four years before moving to his role at our Christchurch campus in 1987.

Paul's special interests and areas of experience include behavioural paediatric audiology, the assessment of speech perception in children, the fitting and adjustment of hearing aid/s for children, and parent/family/whānau guidance counselling and support.

He is a Full Member of the New Zealand Audiological Society (NZAS), and the NZAS Standards and Supervision Committees; and the founding editor of and contributor to the Bulletin of the NZAS.

Paul takes part in and has presented papers at conferences and also contributes to workshops and resource development at the Ida Institute in Denmark. He takes part in working groups convened by New Zealand’s Ministries of Health and Education; and is also involved in the supervision and training of students for the Master of Audiology postgraduate degree, and training of Teachers of the Deaf, both at the University of Canterbury.

The audiology office at our Christchurch operates Monday to Friday, 8.30 am-12.30 pm and 1.30 pm - 5.00 pm

Scope of Practice

Our audiology service offers a range of supports

Clinical — hearing assessment, hearing aid fitting and evaluation, monitoring of young child and student progress in listening and the perception of speech. The provision of resources, guidance, and support to children/students themselves and to their parents/family/whānau.

Resource development — Maintaining current knowledge of paediatric and educational audiology through literature review, and the production of suitable resources and training materials for children/students, their families, and associated professionals.

Training — Orientation of students training to become teachers of the Deaf and audiologists towards an appreciation of the world of the child and young person with hearing loss and the needs of their parents/families/whānau. The upskilling of professional colleagues in audiology and education.
