Primary and secondary school

When it's time for school, you and your child have a choice of whether they attend their local mainstream school or our specialist schools, and attend one of our deaf bi-lingual provisions in either Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.

Attending mainstream school

Many children go to a mainstream school and either get support in their classes from Resource Teachers of the Deaf (RTDs) or Communication Education Support Workers (CESWs), via video tutoring, or external support through our ASSIST liaisons who offer advice and guidance and regular monitoring to check progress is being maintained; this is dependent on what resources are available in your local area.

Deaf bilingual provisions

Students who meet the criteria can apply to enrol at Ko Taku Reo Enrolled School. These students would attend one of our primary and secondary school provisions located at a partner school.

Like a school within a school, students are enrolled with Ko Taku Reo but integrated with the partner school; they wear the same uniform (where applicable), follow many of the same procedures, are involved in school events and some children even learn alongside their hearing peers in the mainstream classes.

Our partner schools

The Board has opted into the Ministry of Education’s School Donation Scheme and does not seek school donations from parents and caregivers (unless provided for under the scheme). Further information on school donations can be found at www.education.govt.nz.
