Commissioner Update - Acting Executive Principal

03 Nov 2022

Kia ora koutou,

Last week I spent time with the Executive Leadership Team and discussed various options around the appointment of an Acting Executive Principal. A key priority for me is to ensure continuity and stability for our staff, and to allow for the good work that is already happening to continue.

There is a legal requirement for the school to appoint a Principal. In consultation with the Executive Leadership Team, I have appointed Denise Powell as the nominal Acting Executive Principal. Denise takes up this role from Saturday 19 November 2022. Until then, Denise will continue with the contract role I announced last month.

As Acting Executive Principal, Denise will work with the Executive Leadership Team to provide leadership and to continue to work closely with me as Commissioner. This is a full-time position to provide continuity of leadership until the appointment of a permanent Executive Principal. As previously mentioned, I expect this process to get underway in early 2023.

Denise’s role as Acting Executive Principal will look a little different to the permanent role. Together with the Executive Leadership Team, I will be reviewing delegations of responsibility to spread these across the Acting Executive Principal role and the three Directors. Drawing on the combined experience of all members of the team will cause the least disruption to Ko Taku Reo in the coming months, while we work to appoint a permanent Executive Principal.

As a result of this change Denise will no longer be available to Chair of the Advisory Group that is being established to support me as Commissioner. I will make an announcement on the appointment of the Chair once the final group members have been determined.

For the remainder of Term 4, I will work closely with the Executive Leadership Team on what the next steps will be for the school. I will update you regularly on our plans as they are developed.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ngā mihi nui,
Mike Rondel
