Blessing of the building at Hillmorton High School

25 Jan 2021

Friday the 22nd January I attended the whakawatea for Aonga Ake, the new classroom block at Hillmorton High School. Upstairs are the classrooms for the Hillmorton Provision. For the Hillmorton staff and Board of Trustees, this journey began following the Christchurch Earthquake, nearly ten years ago. The design for the building is stunning! Deaf Education was involved with the planning and design and contributed a Deaf perspective with regards to lighting and acoustics that would best suit our learners. Provision Lead Catherine also worked closely with staff to arrange window treatment and installation of IT equipment. Kia ora Catherine for your dedicated mahi to support the new build.

You'll see in one of the pics a suspended acoustic panel, it looks like a piece of art!

Take a look at the cultural narrative designs on the glass doors. These were created by a Hillmorton High School student who incorporated 'hands' in her design to reflect our partnership and belonging.

The Ko Taku Reo teaching spaces can be seen in the pic of a corridor with mustard walls.

Now that the building has been blessed, our Teaching Team is itching to get into the rooms and set them up with new furniture! What a wonderful way to start the school year!
