Celebrating International Week of Deaf People!

18 Sep 2023

This week, we are thrilled to join the global community in celebrating International Week of Deaf People. Today, we're focusing on a crucial aspect of this celebration – the Declaration of the Rights of Deaf Children. Article 6 of the Declaration emphasises a fundamental right: that all deaf children have the right to learn the linguistic identity and culture of the deaf community.

Here at Ko Taku Reo, we are excited to announce that we are taking significant steps towards incorporating Deaf Studies into our Extended Curriculum. Our curriculum will delve into essential topics such as identity, Deafhood, culture, and mana motuhake, empowering our ākonga to understand themselves better and navigate the world with confidence and pride.

We are particularly proud of our students who have been actively involved in piloting these themes through our Virtual Deaf Space program. Thank you for being a part of this amazing journey with us as we celebrate International Week of Deaf People. Keep an eye out for more updates on our exciting journey ahead!
