Fishy Friday in Tu Kokiri

08 Aug 2021

On Friday, Tu Kokiri students really enjoyed "Fishy Friday" as part of their Food and Nutrition programme, at the Auckland Deaf Society.
Deaf Community member, John Schischka (Fishing Master!!) joined us for a day of "Fish"
We learned about the Maori God of the sea-Tangaroa, and the importance of us all being kaitiaki of our Moana. Students learned about Sustainable commercial fishing techniques and where our 5 fish had come from. (Thanks "Better Fishing", Napier). John educated us about fishing catch limits and size limits of different species and the importance of following the rules. Kingi taught us the Maori names for some of the fish species.
John showed us how to fillet fish and worked alongside students to polish their techniques. We had five fish, kahawai, red cod, and gurnard to practice on.
After filleting, John taught us how to smoke the fish then Kerry helped the students to make smoked fish pie for lunch....delicious!!!
