Kelston Primary Provision Learners Celebrating Matariki
30 Jun 2025
At Kelston Primary Provision, our top priority is to empower students to rise to academic challenges with resilience, perseverance, and growing independence. But their learning journey goes beyond the classroom - it’s also a powerful exploration of identity, self-belief, and belonging.
This year, through engaging in Deaf Studies, our learners have begun to uncover the richness of Deaf culture and community. They are developing a strong sense of Deaf identity and pride, finding confidence in who they are and where they belong in the world.
To honour Matariki, our students created a vibrant and collaborative artwork that reflects both language and culture. At its heart are their traced hands, arranged in a radiant starburst formation - each handshape helped students connect meaning to signs, also represented in the surrounding stars.
Each handprint is also personal, acknowledging and celebrating the student’s unique cultural heritage. These layers of identity come together to represent the diverse, multicultural spirit of our learning community. As part of their inquiry, students also explored Māori myths and legends, such as the tale of Māui slowing the sun; narratives that have inspired and been beautifully woven into their artwork.
In a final tribute to Matariki, students added their own Hiwa-i-te-rangi stars - the star of wishes. In them, they expressed heartfelt hopes for the future, reminding us all of the dreams, potential, and vision our tamariki carry with them.
More than a display, this artwork is a celebration - of language, culture, identity, and aspiration. It reflects the essence of Matariki and the spirit of our learners at Kelston Primary Provision.
