Life in the Residence - Home away from home
04 Nov 2025
Ever wondered what it's like to live in a student residence? Imagine stepping into a new chapter of your life, leaving behind the familiar comforts of home to pursue your education in Auckland or Christchurch. For many Deaf and hard of hearing students from around New Zealand, this marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey.
It begins with a conversation, perhaps from your parents or caregivers, telling you that you'll be joining a student residence. Excitement mingles with nervousness. What will it be like? Will it feel like home? Will people understand you?
As moving day arrives, you pack your essentials and your favourite items, things that bring comfort and familiarity. When you arrive, you see other students arriving too, each with their own story. You may wonder: Will I be able to communicate easily? Will I be included?
Then, residence staff greet you with warm smiles and helpful guidance. For Deaf students, communication support is available whether through NZSL, interpreters, or visual aids. You're shown to your room, and slowly, the nerves begin to settle. You realise you're not alone.
Finding your rhythm
By Term Two, the Residence feels like a second home. You've made friends, found your routine, and discovered ways to connect, whether through spoken language, sign language, writing, or shared activities.
Life in Residence is full of structure and fun:
- Homework hours and shared duties
- Student meetings
- Weekend activities and sports
- Guest speakers who share inspiring stories—sometimes with NZSL interpretation
- Weekly cooking nights where students prepare meals together
- Board games, movie nights with captions, and late-night chats
Going home, coming back
As each term ends, the excitement of going home builds. You look forward to sharing your stories about the friends you've made, the challenges you've overcome, and the fun you've had. And when the end of the year arrives, the joy of reuniting with family is special.
But there's something special about knowing you'll return. After the long holiday break, you'll come back to familiar faces, new adventures, and another year of growth and connection.
More than a place to stay
Life in the Residence is more than just a place to stay; it's a community, a support system, and a home away from home. It's where Deaf and hard of hearing people grow, laugh, learn, and create memories that last a lifetime.
