Māori Language Week at the Early Years Whānau Centre

20 Sept 2024

At Sumner, in the Early Years Whānau Centre (EYWC), we've been learning about our local Cultural Narrative, exploring the rich history of our surroundings!

We learned about Rapanui (Shag Rock), known as the ‘great sternpost,’ which guided waka into the Ihutai (Avon Heathcote Estuary). We also discovered the significance of Tuawera (Cave Rock), a landmark for gathering kaimoana in Ōhikaparuparu (Sumner). And let's not forget Te Onepoto (Taylors Mistake), a treasured short sandy beach and renowned fishing spot in Ōtautahi (Christchurch).

These landmarks are more than just beautiful sights—they tell the story of local Māori culture and history, and we pass by two of them on our way to the EYWC.

To celebrate our learning, we've created stunning wall art that brings these stories to life.

One of our students, Jonty, even visited one of these special places with his mum, and they shared their adventure on Storypark. We love seeing our learning journey continue beyond the classroom!
