Sign language for All Deaf Learners
22 Sept 2021
At Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand, we provide two centres for early childhood education. There is the Preschool in Auckland and the Early Years Whanau Centre in Christchurch. We are also looking at setting up playgroups throughout NZ, currently, we have one in Wellington and Dunedin.
We work with our youngest learners to create environments that respect their choices, culture, and languages. This includes NZSL which gives all Deaf tamariki access to language.
We believe that it is the right of the child to express themselves through play and that this is the basis for good language modelling and teaching opportunities. We respect the views of the whānau at all times and encourage the use of NZSL for communication to flow where appropriate.
When working with our youngest learners we encourage communication, in whatever way that the child can, and we use our basis of whanaungatanga to strengthen this with our tamariki and their whānau.
All children in the Early Years love learning through play, and we see their confidence to communicate with us and each other grow daily. Here are some pictures of our tamariki communicating in NZSL!
Happy International Week of Deaf People!
