Update on our work with the Ministry on the current Christchurch Sumner site property solutions

12 Nov 2025

We are pleased to share an update on the work the Ministry of Education have been undertaking with Ko Taku Reo.

The Ministry are continuing to work closely with Ko Taku Reo as we explore future property solutions that will best support learning and wellbeing for our school community. This mahi is part of the Christchurch Schools Rebuild programme (led by the Ministry of Education) and is aligned with both our educational goals and wider community aspirations.

Our initial conversations have focused on ensuring the Ministry understand our current and future needs. We have been exploring a range of property options (given to us by the Ministry of Education), including the existing Ministry-owned site in Sumner, Christchurch, as well as other potential locations. Each option is being carefully assessed for feasibility (how easy or difficult it is to do), accessibility, and long-term sustainability.

While decisions are still being worked through, please be assured that ongoing consultation between the Ministry and Ko Taku Reo is focused on ensuring any proposed solutions reflect the needs of our school whānau.

Timeline for Next Steps

  • September–November 2025: Continued engagement between the Ministry and Ko Taku Reo to refine property options and assess feasibility.
  • Late 2025: The Ministry to review options and begin their internal decision-making process.
  • Early –Mid 2026: Expected Ministry update on the preferred property solution and location.

We are committed to keeping our community informed as this work progresses. We look forward to further engagement with you in early 2026, when we will be able to share more details and hear your thoughts.
